- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2013First thing first: this is a book of projects, not a book on woodworking techniques. In terms of number of projects, this book is a GREAT value.
Each projects comes with at least a two-view drawings: front view and side (or top) view. Most of the projects also have an exploded view to illustrate how the project goes together. Better yet, each project comes with photograph of finished product.
One caveat: The drawings are not actual size; we have to enlarge them to full size. The authors explains several methods how we can do it.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2024Gave this to my husband for Christmas and he loves it. He loves to build things himself and this has
so many new projects for him to do. He'll be busy until next Christmas.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2021I bought this book as an entry point for me to do woodworking with my husband so I could try making something on my own without frustrating my spouse in the woodshop by asking for help!
The projects have drawings and pictures of the items, you will need to photocopy and enlarge the drawings as templates so unless you have a printer/copier lying around, prepare for a trip to the store. You will also need to have other equipment available for some of the projects like a fret or scroll saw (fretwork shelves, mirrors) or a lathe (candlestick holders). You could do it with hand tools such as a coping saw but with many hobby woodworkers being busy, power tools are helpful for the projects in the book.
I liked more the antique and kitchen projects sections with items being more useful but so many of them were things for kids and I don't have kids! The writing style seems to be well suited if you have a child that is interested in making something that isn't a birdhouse. I'm sure with some inspiration and creativity you can turn these projects into something with a modern flair or your own artistic style.
I will say that I like the Colonial Wall Shelf, the Pennysylvania Wall Cupboard, Adirondack chairs, and the Boot Jack as being things I would actually build from this book but the majority of the projects I would not. The Hooded Doll Cradle in the brown stain as they have in the picture makes it look super creepy, like a perfect Halloween decor idea if the Annabelle doll was going to be in it. But if you can see past the finishes that have been used in the projects you could lighten these up for a refreshing update that would work for your home or as gifts for others.
Projects are inspired by historical pieces and folk art, if this isn't what you like in terms of styles of furnishings and decor, give this book a miss.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2008I have leafed through a number of project books only to be disappointed with the types of projects that would be offered. Many would be cheesey and not anything you really would find useful or feel comfortable making for another. This book is quite different.
If you have friends and family members that enjoy items of a "Michaels" craft variety, you will definitely find something worth making and giving to them for holidays and other special occasions. If you are a father/grandfather/mother/grandmother who would like to see a young child experience a toy or piece of furniture that is not molded in an asian factory, this book would also be for you.
Joinery for the projects is somewhat varied. Unlike other project books I have looked through, these are not all butt-joints and overly simple (though there are some projects that are very simple for those getting started). The book will not teach you how to paint, cut, or join. It is what it says it is, a book of projects that has ideas, plans, and diagrams. If you are very new to woodworking, I would suggest buying this with another book that teaches the basic woodworking skills necessary to build the projects listed safely.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024I purchased this for my husband who absolutely loves it and has made some of the project and is working on more. High recommendations from him.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice book
Nice book, well written, but for the American market and very detailed, would suit a cabinetmaker interested in American style

4.0 out of 5 stars Good idea book but not a how to step by step book for beginners
It's a good book to come up with ideas and has some pointers on how to do it but I feel the bullet points are always too vague for a beginner like me. So maybe more recommended for a intermediate level that already knows the basics and feels comfortable with just some pointers.
The projects inside the book are interesting and for all taste and sizes.
Would be nice to have the dimensions also in the metric system.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book for grades 7-8 and junior high technology/construction classes
This is a fantastic book for grades 7-8 and junior high technology/construction classes. Great range of projects for different skill levels and also allows the student to pick something of interest that they would like to build. You can get by with bandsaws, scroll saws and a basic set of tools (a planer is nice for the different thicknesses of wood used in the projects). Bought a class set many years ago and stil use them today.
